Digital Library Services
Many organizations and libraries are scanning their resources using document scanning services in order to maintain a digital collection. Digitized library collections protect original materials and enable students, researchers, and scholars to access the library’s e-books, online catalogs, and other resources via the internet more easily.
There is a shift towards digital transformation in all public libraries nationwide, offering a variety of experiences with books and materials, and ensuring that the material can be accessed anywhere, at any time. Libraries and museums, no matter how big or small, have made their historic or precious collections accessible to the public through digitization. It especially became helpful during the pandemic-induced lockdown.
That’s why many libraries have decided to shift their services online when all bookstores, libraries, universities, schools, and colleges were closed. This is how digitized library collections become vital to scholars, educators, and students to continue their work.
Libraries in some form or another have been around since 2,600 BC. No matter what form they took their purpose was always the same – to collect and store documents, information, and literature. Fast forward to today and libraries are still doing this, but in a very different form.
During the 1960s libraries began to change and reflect what was happening with technology. Suddenly libraries were no longer restricted to books and papers, the digital age meant computers were introduced. And as technology has continued to change, so has the way in which libraries store their information. Today digital library services are more prevalent than ever before, and this trend will only continue as technology advances and evolves
What Is Digital Library Collection?
As we mentioned previously, the concept of a digital library refers to a collection of documents available in electronic form, available on the Internet, or on CD-ROM drives. The library may offer a variety of materials, including magazine articles, books, papers, images, sound files, and videos. Among other names, digital libraries can be called online libraries, internet libraries, digital repositories, or digital collections. A digital database is a collection of text, still images, audio, video, digital documents, or other digital media formats that can be accessed online.
A digital library not only stores content, but also organizes, searches, and retrieves it. Individuals or organizations can maintain digital libraries of varying sizes and scopes.Β Locally stored digital content can be accessed remotely via computer networks. It is possible for these information retrieval systems to exchange information with each other through interoperability and sustainability.
With digital library trend the libraries are moving to be “bookless”. It’s hard to imagine stepping into a library that doesn’t contain any books, but that’s exactly where the future may be headed with digital library service. In fact some colleges and universities are already doing this, such as Stanford who made the move to go book-less five years ago.
What Are The 3 Types Of Digital Libraries?
While some may be apprehensive of digital library trend, itβs important to understand that libraries arenβt looking to become less helpful, rather more helpful for people by providing digital copies of their holdings. Digital copies take away many of the restrictions that are posed when dealing with an actual physical book that can be lost, damaged, and may not be available when you want to sign it out. It will be interesting to watch how libraries choose to use this new digital age of document scanning and if in fact the majority end up book-less in the future. WithΒ digital library serviceΒ in the meantime you may want to accustom yourself to reading digital copies of your favorite books!
There are three types of digital libraries. Let’s have a look at the followings:
- Institutional Repositories – Most academic libraries are actively involved in digitizing or digitizing the institution’s books, papers, theses, and other works. In accordance with the aims of open access, these repositories are often made available to the general public without any restrictions, unlike commercial journals, where publishers limit access rights. Occasionally, digital libraries are referred to as institutional repositories, truly free repositories, or corporate repositories. The purpose of institutional repository software is to archive, organize, and search the content of a library. DSpace, GSDL (Greenstone Digital Library), EPrints, Digital Commons, and Fedora Commons-based systems Islandora and Samvera are all popular open-source solutions.
- National Library Collections – It involves the submission of at least one copy of all material published in a country for preservation to an institution, usually the national library, under copyright legislation and sometimes under laws specifically regarding legal deposit. Several amendments have been made to the Copyright Act 1968 to cover the new formats, including the 2016 amendment in Australia. There have been various types of electronic depositories built since then. Both the British Library’s Publisher Submission Portal and the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek’s model have one deposit point for a network of libraries, but public access is limited to library reading rooms. Most of the content of the Australian National deposit system is accessible remotely by the general public as well.
- Digital Archives – There are several ways in which physical archives differ from physical libraries. Archive definitions traditionally include:
- Primary sources of information (usually letters and papers directly produced by individuals or organizations) rather than secondary sources (books, periodicals, etc.).
- Grouping their contents rather than arranging them individually.
- Unique content
This technology breaks down the second and third of these general rules, making digital libraries even more revolutionary for archives. “Digital archives” and “online archives” may still contain primary sources, but they are more likely to be described as individuals than in groups or collections. Due to their digital format, their contents can also be easily reproduced and may have been copied from elsewhere. One of the oldest digital archives of academic physical primary source materials is the Oxford Text Archive.
Unlike libraries, archives hold a different type of material. A library collects individual books and serials, or a bound set of individual items. Libraries hold multiple copies of books and journals, and any given copy will generally be just as good as any other copy. In archives and manuscript libraries, “there are the records of corporate bodies, individual papers, and family papers”.
To preserve their informative content and provide understandable and useful information over time, archives must preserve the context within which their records were created and the relationship between them. The archival bond expresses the context of the archives through the hierarchical organization.
The fundamental purpose of archival descriptions is to describe, explain, retrieve, and access information about archival collections. A digital archival description is usually encoded with the Encoded Archival Description XML format. Through the EAD, detailed archival descriptions and resources can be accessed from worldwide repositories through a standardized electronic representation.
What Is The Main Purpose Of A Digital Library?
The purpose of a digital library is to provide coherent organization and convenient access to typically large amounts of digital information. This digital library aims to assist users in managing, accessing, storing, and manipulating information stored in the collection of material that represents the library’s “holdings.” It may be humans or automated processes acting on their behalf or in support of humans.
Through the internet connection, you can access information from anywhere in the world through a digital library without physical boundaries. You can access it at any time, 24/7. Multiple access means that the same resource can be used by many users at once.
What Are The Benefits Of Digital Library?
Here are the following benefits of library digitization:
- Digital Library needs no physical boundary. You can access the information through the internet connection all over the world.
- Access them at any time, 24/7.
- A lot of users can use the same resources at the same time, which is called multiple access.
- It provides the right to use much richer content in a more structured manner. It means you can easily move from one particular catalog to another particular chapter.
- An exact copy of the original can be made multiple times without any waste in quality.
- It doesn’t require much space as digital information requires very little physical space to contain them.
- One digital library can create a link to any other resources of other digital libraries in a very convenient way.
- The maintenance cost of a digital library is more affordable than a traditional library.
- It gives user-friendly interfaces, giving clickable access to its resources.

What Are The Features Of A Digital Library?
As we discussed above, the digitization of library collection means capturing, cataloging, storing, searching, protecting, and retrieving information of various digital formats. It helps in organizing items like books, journals, catalogs, and other formats digitally. The overall purpose of a digital library is to underpin learning and acquisition of knowledge to build a strong base and enhance the quality of life.
Here are the following features of a digital library.
- Multiple Access – It provides access to multiple users.
- No Physical Boundary – In a digital library, no physical boundary is defined one can access the database digitally.
- Information Retrieval System- It is the process of obtaining information system resources that is relevant.
- Access Any Time Of The Day- The digital library facilitates the usability of information 24 x 7.
- Easily Accessible – It is easy to obtain information through the digital library system and make use of it.
- Contains Huge Amount Of Information – A digital library contains a large amount of information.
- No Limitation Of Space – There is no such limitation in the case of a digital library. It can store thousands of resources without facing any difficulties because media storage is very affordable.
- More Than A Library – Its spectrum is broader than the old school libraries. Digital libraries engage with their clients via formal as well as informal modes.
